The History of Hurstbourne Country Club

You’d never guess by looking at it, but the luxurious mansion that is Hurstbourne Country Club began as a modest farmhouse built in 1854. It was expanded into a mansion before the 1920s and transformed into a country club in 1966. Today, this 30,000 sq ft clubhouse has been recognized by Architectural Digest as the Most Beautiful in the state of Kentucky.

However, that’s not the only reason Hurstbourne Country Club is so noteworthy. It’s also the only club in the city with 27 holes of golf, conveniently accessible from all parts of Louisville. For couples who share a passion for golf, this venue offers a perfect setting for a wedding, combining elegance with sport!

The real showstopper of the venue is the breathtaking chapel wall located just off the first hole on the Executive Golf Course. This stunning feature, originally part of a church in Europe, was transported to Hurstbourne Country Club, adding an ethereal charm to the setting. Although the details of how this architectural feat was accomplished are scarce, the chapel wall stands as a gorgeous focal point for outdoor ceremonies. It’s an ideal spot to watch the sunset through the towering pines as you exchange vows—a truly magical experience.

While the interior rooms of Hurstbourne Country Club are shrouded in a bit of mystery, they are said to be steeped in old-world charm. The rich history and elegant design make this venue a unique and unforgettable place to celebrate your special day.

Hurstbourne Country Club has a storied past, with its name derived from “hurst,” meaning a grove of trees, and “bourne,” meaning boundary. The area was first settled by William Lynn in 1779, who chose the site for its natural beauty, fertile land, and a large spring that still flows near the 10th tee of the club’s Championship Golf Course.

Following Lynn’s death, the property passed through various hands, including prominent early Louisville figure Richard Clough Anderson, who acquired 500 acres and built a stone mansion called Soldier’s Retreat. Anderson, a Revolutionary War hero, lived on the estate until his death in 1826. The present clubhouse, constructed around 1818, stands on what was once Anderson’s estate. Over the years, the property changed ownership multiple times and was eventually known as Hurstbourne Farm.

In 1928, Mrs. Alvin T. Hert commissioned renowned Louisville architect E.T. Hutchings to remodel and expand the house. The renovation incorporated Gothic details and brickwork, giving the clubhouse its distinctive appearance. One of the most striking features of the clubhouse is the 60’ x 30’ drawing room, now the main dining room, which boasts a 14-foot ceiling and oak paneling imported from a century-old English house. The venue’s rich history and beautiful setting make Hurstbourne Country Club a unique and charming venue for weddings!
