When COVID-19 began to devastate the state of Kentucky, I kept wracking my brain for how I could actually help. I’ve always been a proponent of giving of your time, talent, and treasure. The one area that I truly felt capable of doing this was with photography.
I knew of numerous couples whose children had been devastated at missing out on their junior or senior prom because of this pandemic. So, knowing I might be able to spread a little joy, I decided to offer free prom portraits. The idea was that each individual student would be able to dress up in their prom attire and feel beautiful, even if just for that day.
When my first appointment bounded out of her car at Papa John’s Park, I couldn’t help but see how much joy this was going to bring. After thirteen appointments (all of which I photographed from six feet away or further) the genuineness of the smiles we captured gave us back some of the hope this pandemic has stolen.
We have to remember that even though we might be lacking in certain areas, our talents are enough to get us through this terrible time. Spreading hope is a privilege we get as human beings. I urge you to find the joy in today – because if we just take the time to look for it, it really is all around us.
