The Colony Club | Kati & Mat

April 27, 2020

The Colony Club Detroit MI

How They Met

Kati and Mat met out at a bar.  Hanging out with friends, neither of them could hear very well, but they were both attracted to each other. That night, once they returned home, Mat Facebook friended Kati. The rest was history.  Over the next three years they found more and more in common that they loved, including the Joffrey Ballet.  One of their favorite things is to mimic the poses on the main posters announcing the ballet.

The Proposal

During a trip to Aruba, Mat decided to pop the question.  Around sunset, he asked Kati to take a walk along the ocean.  Finding a pier, they walked to the end, and as the sun was dipping below the horizon, Mat dropped to one knee.  Kati was shocked and waited, but Mat didn’t say anything.  Kati broke the silence with, “Yes, I’ll marry you. Will you ask me?” The ring is Mat’s great grandma’s! It meant a lot to his family that Kati have something that represented her joining the family.

Elegant photos were at the top of the list for Kati and Mat.  Kati knew the perfect venue back in her hometown of Detroit.  The Colony Club, located downtown, offered the absolute best option with a stunning ballroom and rooms for a cocktail hour.  It was also within walking distance of the iconic Fox Theatre, a location Kati wanted to utilize in her bridal portraits.

The Big Day

The morning started with mimosas and coffee.  Specialty mugs were made to ensure whose Starbucks belonged to who. Renata Makeup INC and Erica B focused on the prepping the bridesmaids hair and makeup as Kati relaxed comfortably, enjoying the conversation.  As Kati’s mom zipped her into her BHLDN lace gown, a single tear fell from her face, her pride evident.

Mat got ready three floors below. His custom made green velvet suit perfectly accented the bridesmaids gowns from Nordstrom. He and his groomsmen laughed and joked as they got ready.  When groomsmen portraits began one of the girls headed over; she was the Best Woman while Kati’s brother Chris was the Man of Honor 🙂

The ceremony took place in the great ballroom.  As Kati entered it was evident that Mat saw no one but her.  His smile radiated throughout the room, until he couldn’t hold it back anymore and he mouthed, “Wow.”  Kati’s aunt officiated the ceremony, eventually pronouncing the two Man and Wife.

Celebrating their marriage with a bottle of Dom Perignon, Kati and Mat signed their marriage license in the second ballroom of the Colony Club, rejoicing with their friends and family while taking joint portraits.  We spent fifteen minutes with just Kati and Mat, creating luxurious portraits.

As Kati and Mat entered their reception, they cut the cake from Vince and Joes, sharing their first bites together as man and wife.  After a delicious dinner of salmon and chicken, we headed out into the sleeting weather to the Fox Theatre.

When we returned, they shared their first dance, then danced with their parents.  The DJ, Jevon Jackson, a friend who really wanted to DJ their wedding, played house music for the remainder of the night.

We are so grateful to have been a part of this exquisite day.  Having known Kati since she was eighteen, it was an enormous honor to have been asked to take her portraits and we wish she and Mat the absolute best!
